What's your authority for this one, Carolyn?

As far back as the late 1960s the American Heritage dictionary lists "awhile" as proper usage. And it points out the differences in how you use "awhile" and "a while." The noun "for" is not used with awhile. Thus, you may stay for a while, but you stay awhile.
