Oh Sheri don't lug the desktop! No amount of computer addiction is
worth lugging a desktop on a trip with you! If you can't get a
connection, take this as some time to regroup and relax rather than
feel like you have to check in with your computer regularly. I now
totally ignore email when I go on vacation and it really makes a huge
difference in my mental health to have that break.
Another option is to look for a cyber cafe -- a cafe that offers
internet access.
