[GWL]: Is It Really "Best"?
Nan, you've hit one of my real hot buttons. As a vegetable gardener, I have
learned through trial and error which variety of each vegetable is "best"
for my garden, measured by me in terms of taste, size, toughness of the
plant, etc. The dilemma is that the seed industry with its national testing
program doesn't care what is "best" for my garden in Michigan. They need to
find vegetable varieties that are "all right" for most of the country. Thus
they breed for average rather than "best". The reason is simple, up to now
at least. Seed companies can't make money selling seed that only is "best"
in one region of the country. The California Wonder sweet pepper is "best"
only in Southern California and the Gulf states, but it is "okay" throughout
the rest of the country. Now with the Internet, that all may change. A
company can market regional preferences with little overhead costs. So the
sweet pepper that does fantastic only in Michigan and Wisconsin can be sold
in those areas via the Internet.
I suspect the whole green industry is set up the same way; e.g. trees,
shrubs, perennials, etc. What is "best" on the Horticulture magazine list
will be "just okay" in the whole country and "best" in only a limited region
of the country. My goal in five years is to have a list of all the truly
"best" plants for each of the regions of the country. I feel that the data
is available, but will be very time consuming and expensive to collect and
organize; so when I win the lottery.......
Jeff
