Re: [GWL]: Agent or no agent?

This is indeed a contract issue, and it is a small one that authors can usually win out on-a win-win situation too, if publishers want their authors out there hustling their books....which of course they do.
In my contract on Allergy-Free Gardening (and also on my next book to be published with Ten Speed Press--Safe Sex in the Garden) I get a 50% discount on any books I buy AND I get royalties on the ones I buy, too. Really, I only think this is fair.

I never realized (and the publisher of my last book never bothered to tell me) that I could buy
copies of my own book for half price!

Is this _really_ true? Or did you just gloss over it in the contract? In almost every book deal I'm familiar with, the terms and conditions of books you can buy are clearly spelled out. In quite some detail. For instance, many houses do not count books bought by the author as part of the royalties bank. In other words, you buy, say, 50 books, earning the same discount as a book dealer who buys that many. However, the 50 he buys pay you a royalty. The 50 you buy do not.

The point is, that kind of deal is clearly spelled out in the contract.
