Keep in mind that people write for various reasons. My first book was
necessitated by the demands of academia - publish or perish. I needed a
book to use as a text and the kind I needed didn't exist. I wrote it,
had a text tailor made for my course and got tenure. Money was nice, but
not the big goal for that one.
This one is motivated much along the lines that Tom described. I love to
write about gardens and gardening. I am publishing in magazines and have
other writing jobs that pay me the real money. Sometimes you do
something for the love of it, the fun or the challenge of it, to stretch
yourself - and because maybe, just maybe it will also sell.
One bonus I got with this proposal was that even though my husband had
said we had no more places to plant any more gardens he realized the
design challenges I needed to meet and photograph and gave up another
chunk of lawn. That alone was worth a lot to me. ;-)
I write elsewhere for my money, and have thus far managed to almost make
up for my teaching salary. The book is for me.
