I agree with Marge. I was "Americanizing" a British book on lawns, and was appalled when the authors referred to earthworms as pests in the lawn. However, when I talked to an expert on lawn care in Britain (at a major turfgrass organization), I learned that there is a British breed of worm that is huge and leaves mountains of castings on top of the grass, and bores tunnels to rival that of moles (allowing room for hyperbole). So you've got to look at the whole picture and know whereof you speak (or write). In my case, I rewrote the entire book for the American market, earning a pleasing fee for my troubles. Vive la difference! Catriona Tudor Erler

This country (and now on the net, the world) contains too many
variations in soil and climate for any gardening advice to fit all
situations.

At the risk of committing the sin of discussion gardening, ratherthangarden writing (it seems to me this topic leads there inevitably),there issome GOOD advice that can be passed on. To make use of thatvaluableresource of wood ashes, put them in your compost pile and allowthem to befully broken down. The composting disposes of the lime, and theresultingproduct is higher in phosphorus and potash than it would be withouttheashes.
I have been doing it for more than 50 years in New Mexico andSouthernCalifornia (with highly alkaline soil and water) with nothing butgoodresults.
