I don't claim to be an expert, either.  My personal style is that I don't write about something unless I have first hand experience with it in some way.  That's not always possible for every writer, but at very least, anyone who relies on interviews and such should have enough grounding , plus cross checking against other sources, to know when they are being fed the real thing or bovine wastes.

Sorry, Lon,

By it's very definition, anytime you interview an expert and report what he/she says, you are relying on second hand information.

I don't know about you, but I don't claim to be totally knowledgeable and expert on every garden subject there is. So I, for one, will contine to rely on the second hand information that comes from people who know more than I do.

Hopefully, what gardening knowledge I have will help me separate the wheat from the chaff when conducting such interviews.
