RE: [GWL]: Links for garden writers/GWL site

Building on what Linda said earlier, just a thought, but perhaps the
reference tool information should be
password protected to preserve some value towards justifying a paid
membership in GWAA?

Maintaining a good reference base can be a big job. On the internet, you
also have the job of keeping the hyperlinks current. Link maintenance is an
ongoing task, sometimes a nightmare. It is unrealistic to expect that to be
done reliably on a volunteer basis.

Is there funding for the web site, its creation, content and maintenance?
Once money comes into the picture, you need to make some guidelines.

I think GWAA needs to make a basic decision as to its commitment to the web
site and the purposes for which it will be designed. In terms of, say,
public access and information vs. member services? Once that has been made
clear, the rest would follow. There are infinite ways it could be useful to
garden writers and photographers as well as related activites.

Just think, the membership list could be published and there would be no
more updating a printed directory by hand! (Just think how often email
addresses change.)

Obviously, the site would need to cover at least some of its costs. Perhaps
space could be sold for posting commercial "press releases" with members
receiving a discount. The advertisor/announcer would realize a savings in
printing, packaging and postage; members would gain 24/7 access to the
information. Even such simple, but useful, nuts and bolts as contact
information could be maintained and updated/changed asap as needed.

There are so many possibilities.

I apologize if this shows up twice, my email is skipping and I did not see
it come through on the list.
