Loosestrife, yikes.

I am stunned. I have been working in the nursery business for years and here I thought the only terrible one was "Purple Loosestrife" (L. whateverosis??). The City of Vancouver has a rigorous anti-loosestrife program and we have, or I thought we had, pretty much eliminated it from our city wetland spaces by having hundreds of people volunteering to yank it out and burn it alive.

Please give me more information. As a member of the Master Gardener's Association, a writer and an educator, I need to know the scoop. Yikes. I'm cc:ng the messages from today's Lythrum postings to Dr. Doug Justice, one of the professionals at the UBC Botanical Garden who is also on the executive of the local Native Plant Society as well.

God. We have been selling with impunity several species including a nicer variegated-leaf one which doesn't run, a purplish brown one with yellow flowers, and the horrendous spreader with the bright yellow flowers which I stupidly brought home from my mother-in-law's place in northern BC. It is, as we say, "a bit vigorous". :)

Sorry about not including the Latin, but I've been working intensely with about 160 inner-city children with varying degrees of terrible deprivation for the last two weeks. I am brain dead.

Happy New Year, everyone.
