contest
RE: GWA contest. The discussion about breaking down the newspaper category
surfaced last year, too. Newspaper contests are always broken into
categories based on the size of the paper's circulation. Can't remember the
flow of questions/answers, but in the end I received word from GWA that size
is taken into account by judges on some kind of (informal?) sliding scale.
Still, judging is subjective and we're all human. It's hard to turn away
from something like the Oregonian's excellent Lewis & Clark series (current
winner), and then immediately judge a solid gray column of type, no matter
how superb the writing in that column. I vote for categories (except
nobody's asking for my opinion!).
