I made this suggestion last year, or was it the year before, and was told that it used to be that way, but was changed. As someone who writes a weekly column who develops and builds a relationship with the readers, I always found it difficult to select one column to enter in accordance with the rules now.
I, too, have heard the comments about first person columns from judges. I'm like Duane, too, in that my columns are like weekly letters to the readers. And, yes, they do let you know what they think. I have always gotten more mail from the garden column that I did in the years I was a newspaper reporter covering life or death (taxes, etc.) stories on the front page.
I also think it's hard for columnists, especially freelancers, to be judged in the same category as staff writers and editors, who might do large spreads, such as cover pieces or doubletrucks. We all know that graphics make the package and my newspaper seldom runs art with my column, even though it is available...editors cite budget constraints of buying freelance photography.
But if I were asked by the judging committee whether I had any self serving suggestions, I would mention one. I think that those who write a regular column should submit at least five or six examples from the prior year. Judging a serialized work, where the writer establishes and nurtures a relationship with his readers is quite different from a stand alone piece of writing.Duane wrote:
