Hardscape and softscape

On another list with a lot of lexicographers (who are only slightly less
compulsive than taxonomists) the matter of hardscapes and softscapes has
come up. The earliest date noted for these terms is c. 1980.

It seems to me as if these terms have been around forever. But checking
my books, I can't find anything earlier. Can anyone help me with an
earlier cite?
