Hello fellow garden writers,
Will I be seeing you in England this coming summer? I talked about this spedcial tour planned for garden writers to just about everyone at the Chicago convention and many of you were highly enthusiastic about the idea. "Where do I sign!" was the usual response! Well, now is the time to act!
For the past two years now British garden writer, Michael Warren, who you probably remember from past conventions, and I have been working on the project of hosting regional meeting in England for both North American and British garden writers so we could get together for a bit of networking and while we're in England, we thought why not visit a few great gardens while we are at it? Donna Dawson of Icangarden and a veteran of numerous garden tours has joined the team to help coordinate the travel arrangements, Michael has managed to wrangle a few invitations to some very special gardensS and it is to all come together this summer, from June 27 to July 6th, 2004.
Heres what we have lined up so far:
Beth Chatto, her incredible garden plus the famous 'dry' garden
The Place for Plants plant centre including a guided tour of Arboretum being restored
Thompson & Morgan - guided tour of trial grounds & presentation
Sun House - garden of Maureen Thompson
Holly Cottage - garden of Barbara Segall
Michael & Lois Warren's garden, plus their Photos Horticultural Picture Library
Notcutts Nursery - guided tour
Hyde Hall - a beautiful garden high on the hills featuring many different types of gardens
Glen Chantry, garden of Sue & Wal Staines
Blooms of Bressingham - Alan Blooms Dell Garden and Adrian Blooms Foggy Bottom Garden
Old Vicarage - garden of Alan Gray and Graham Robson (described by Christopher Lloyd as 'unstoppable gardeners)
The world famous Hampton Court Palace Flower Show
And all this in the company of fellow garden writers.
Of course, there will be time to visit the areas we will be in. There will also be a time for an official meeting with British garden writers. Well be arriving into London on our own and making our way to our city centre hotel for the night, then heading off the country for the balance and back again into London for the last night. This will make it much easier for airline connections.
The price should be about $2,500 to $3,000 Canadian for the land portion of the tour (hotel, meals, bus, admission to all sites, etc.), depending on the number of participants. But the more people who join us, the cheaper it will be for everyone.
What wed need to know soon is how many of you would be interested in attending. We have to reserve relatively soon, especially since obtaining press passes for an entire group has rarely been done before and requires a great deal of advance notice. Should you be interested, well send you the full programme within a month or so.
So check your calendars, arrange vacation time for yourself and/or your partner, andS let us know as soon as you can! Remember, this is not a formal engagement youll be attending: we just need an approximate idea of the numbers. If it's a possibility, let us know.
Please respond directly to Donna Dawson at donna@icangarden.com by January 24 at the latest as to your interest in going on this tour. Once numbers are in, you will receive the complete tour itinerary fully expanded to show details of gardens, etc. And dont hesitate to contact Donna with questions: shell be able to answer them better than I.
And you can bet Ill be there with bells on!
Looking forward to seeing you in Britain this summer!
Larry Hodgson
