Re: Two hour class question
Sheri,
Because I work in a garden center, and speak to the public every week on the radio, I see
and hear all the ways novice gardeners go wrong. I'd recommend that you cover the
following subjects:
1. A vegetable garden, after planting, needs constant weeding or a mulch ASAP. (you can
go over the various mulches) Most people plant the garden and then are shocked when a
month later the weeds are taller than the vegetables.
2. Water deeply less often. Hand-watering is seldom deep enough. (go over soaker hoses
and sprinklers - water early in the AM - an inch of water a week etc.) Most people give a
sprinkle with the hose every day and think that the plant has been "watered." This holds true
for container plants as well.
3. The importance of soil amendments/compost/manure etc.
4. Be observant in the garden - don't wait for pests to be out of control, or disease to get a
good hold. Pick off damaged foliage and bugs early, get a "least-toxic" solution to problems
early on.
5. Know that every year is different, and even for experienced gardeners, some plants grow
well and others don't in any given season.
all the best,
C.L.
