Re: Discouraged by new book

These kinds of errors are very disappointing. My guess is that Timber Press can't be expert in everything. And while we should expect them to catch botanical errors (that being their proclaimed area of expertise), it may be unrealistic to expect them to be able to catch every mistake. That being said, I care deeply about accuracy and would be quite disturbed if my writing contained such errors.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am working w/TImber on a book due out in September. They have caught several errors, primarily of nomenclature, for which I am grateful. But I consider myself to be responsible for the accuracy of the information throughout the text; I'll bear the shame for any egregious errors. It's my understanding that the editing process is more concerned with style, grammar, taxonomy. This is certainly not ideal, but it's also not surprising.

If you don't mind, I'm very curious as to what the error was in describing the original Passover. Would you mind sharing that? Offlist is fine, if that's considered too far off topic.

I recently was reading another book published by Timber Press where there were two glaring errors of fact early in the book (which I have not yet finished). One stated that the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are in Iran (they are in Iraq), and another stated incorrectly a basic fact of the original Passover as described in the Old Testament. I can understand an author making mistakes like this, but why weren't they caught during the editing process? Carolyn Ulrich
