Re: A Potential Problem?

Jeff,
I ran into similar problems last summer and fall putting together the SIP I edit. Most plant places have digitals in various formats and will gladly either send a burned CD to you or let you access a password-protected FTP site for downloads. These options work well for print magazines. However, I, like you, do a number of garden shows and lectures during the year where the slide show is the big draw. I have had slides made from digital images when there was no other alternative, but as you say, it can be expensive if you do many of them. I have resisted PowerPoint for the reasons you cited--poor quality images and expense, but I have done some of them when the images were not important. PowerPoint shines when lists, bullets and talking points are needed to underscore your lecture.

The other alternative, which I've been doing, is to grow the plant and photograph.

Also, many of us have huge slide archives that we are willing to share for a small fee. For instance, I can give you a slide of something for the cost of duplication (usually $2-$3), mailing fee and processing cost--about $5 a slide. That may sound like a lot, but it only gives me about $1 profit if I mail it first class. If the customer is in a hurry and wants overnight delivery, I don't even make that much despite accessing an extra fee for rush service.
