Re: gardenwriters Digest, Vol 24, Issue 44

<I think that sometimes true believers lose sight of their readership. I
preach compost and soil improvement and using the least offensive control
method that does the job, sometimes to the point that I can hear the groans
as people open their papers.>

Even though I am working in Costa Rica this week, I just had to respond. We are garden writers and it is our job to to educate our readers and help them garden/yarden the proper way. . During my 30 years of writing my column, one after another chemical has been removed from the market because it was not safe. Remember Dursban? Remember walking into your house with shoes laden with 2,4,d? Etc, blah, blah......

IMHO, we should ALL work from the premise that no home gardener should ever use the 'icides' that are put at their disposal and that the True Believers who started gardeners down the road of "modern science" ie "icides" were wrong. We are not true believers, just educated to the fact that homeowners are not professionals (as if that justifies any chemical use) or farmers (Ditto)....So, let's hear those groans if that is what it takes! Keep it up!

I can tell you that it is possible to change your readership.....I have done it and so have others. Don't stop. Don't fall for the idea that there is anything right about selectively killing insects, fungi, bacteria etc. with chemicals. When a gardener does this, he or she has to do the job of the missing link(s) in the soil foodweb and doing so not only is more work, but usually results in use of more icides with more missing links and more work ad nuseum!

Cheers,

Jeff L

P.S. There is no abbreviation for Japanese. Simple as that. Using a period doesn't make it less offensive to Japanese people and I know no one on this list means to be offensive.
