Re: [GWL] Copywrite questionHi All
First things first- Happy New Year to the Lot of You.

There are some of us on this list who make their living solely from writing. Some combine it with other related endeavours, i.e. presentations, radio and television, as well as growing, selling plants and so on. Others here, some very talented, "dabble" in the sense that they won't starve if they lose their writing income.
This is directed at the full-time, get published or don't eat group.

Here are two scenarios:
1. WriYou sell your work to a publication that assumes all rights. You have written something on spec and have sold to this market. You get paid but you lose control of your work.
2.You write for hire- either books, guest editorials, columns- anything for which you are paid a set rate and for which you have no intellectual rights.

Do you do this? Often? Is there a distinction between having your work published this way or is there a higher plane of writing on which the author maintains control of their work? Or is that nothing but hoo-haw and the bottom line should win out in a competitive society?

I get mixed messages about this but it's mostly from folks who don't need to earn money. I'm really working hard on diplomacy here so if I've offended anyone by including you out, please forgive me now.

I also suspect, once an answer or two comes in, I'll end up refining the question.

Thanks,
Dan
