rainfall averages
Gene made the comment that a European beech planted in the U.S. may
need supplemental water. But just because an area is known as
"rainy" doesn't translate to more rain. Average rainfall in England
runs the gamut from about 22 inches a year to 40 or so, depending on
the area (granted it's higher on the west coast of Scotland). Here
in rainy Seattle, I'll bet that we get a lot less rain yearly than
elsewhere in the U.S. Often it's a matter of timing — we get little
to no rain in the summer (no, really!).
Regional gardening is everything.
