Just to be clear, you mean the industry, not all landscape architects.
As a proud holder of a Bachelor's of Landscape Architecture and Master's
of Science in Horticulture from the University of Illinois, I can run
circles around a lot of people when it comes to plant selection.  :)
And I have the design background to boot.

I took mild offense, even though I know none was intended.  There are
many LAs who are quite skilled.  And, of course, many who aren't.
