Re: Speaking of magazines

Our local papers keep finding ways to drive readers to their website. For
some time they've had a photo caption contest, with a winner each week. Now they
run the photo and list the names of those who submitted captions, but the
captions themselves can only be read online.
This would be less troubling if their website were more user-friendly.
Unfortunately, it's a pretty frustrating mess.

That's an interesting trend. Out local newspaper has a whole section that
it
calls E-News (or something similar). It asks for community news coverage
from
people that are at events, complete with pictures, and then prints them if
they are deemed useful. Particularly used for sports meetings, and
community
meetings like school redistricting where differing views are common - it
makes
real interviews unnecessary.

I just got a look at the Feb/Mar 2009 issue of Horticulture. There are
numerous plugs for their website, particularly inviting readers to
participate in
the blogs and forums. Then large hunks of the magazine are just
transcriptions from these on-line (free) contributions.
