Re: garden stock photos

One of my jobs is as editor of a sustainable lifetstyle magazine in
print and on the Web, http://www.IndianaLivingGreen.com

I pull from several inexpensive stock houses...

http://www.istockphoto.com
http://www.stockxpert.com
http://www.gimmestock.com
http://www.fotolia.com

From these stock houses, I use all kinds of images, including
horticulture, and yes, there are times when the photographer doesn't
have a clue about what he or she shot and names it something
completely incorrectly. I have received refunds for this before. Most
images on these sites range from a couple of dollars to $10 or $15 on
up, high res and large, perfectly suitable for the cover of a
magazine. istockphoto is connected to Getty Images, which has very
high-end and unusual images, which I've purchased for the magazine.
I've also purchased from these stock houses for my PowerPoint talks,
my newspaper columns/articles and white papers for clients.

For some horticulture images, I've had success visiting university
Web sites. For instance, all of Purdue's images regarding plant
diseases, insects, etc., in its news bureau archive, plant and
diagnostic lab site and at most of its educational sites (extension,
entomology, etc.,) are copyright free. There also are images
available at the USDA plant database Web site...not always, but some
images are copyright free and some are free for educational purposes
(non-commercial).

We all probably know about the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information
Center's bulb.com and bulbpix.com for anything bulb related, all
copyright free.

Many breeders, growers, marketers, etc., (Terra Nova, Walters
Gardens, Great Garden Plants, Plants That Work, Proven Winners/Color
Choice, Stepables,) provide images copyright free if you register at
their sites or contact their marketing/pr people...various procedures
for various sites.

The most difficult for me to find are certain house plants or
tropicals and plants with diseases and insects. I've bought
houseplant images from healthyhouseplants.com...not to take anything
away from Julie who has healthyhouseplants.com, but I think the
Florida growers association would do well to get images posted on its
site for us writers.
