Lit or lighted?

Is something backlit or backlighted (adjective)?
Which is correct? Verb, past tense: I backlit the plant before I shot it.
Or: I backlighted the plant, etc.
"The plant was lit from above" is probably wrong, but sounds less clunky
than "the plant was lighted from above."
