To add a local note to that, it was actually colder in Central Florida the
other night (28F) than it was in Fairbanks (42F- if I remember correctly).Big
time damage on gardens if not protected.

Also talked to a nursery owner in Keys yesterday - sales are well down.
One major nursery (I remember it full of stock two years ago) wholesaling
and retailing is shut and out of business as of this summer.  Mid-sized
(landscaper) is now augmenting income with b-b-q roasting for parties and
restaurants as housing has stopped. Housing prices are back to 02 levels
with for sale signs hanging everywhere.   High-end nursery/landscaping
(amazing plant selection) I visited and chatted with has serious downturn -
and a lot of stock sitting there.

But the upside for the gardeners is the cold weather has knocked back insect
and fungal infections that were just starting their mid-winter population
explosion.
