I will expand this to insert "photographers" wherever Doug says  
"writers".  Photographers are being eaten up by all the free content  
but are realizing that if they have a unique vision or content people  
will actually pay for it directly from the photographer's site.   
Sometimes not a lot but it adds up.  Consider the vision of  
photographer Dan Heller http://www.danheller.com/bizfaq.html
I don't think we, as creative content people, can expect the markets  
to come to us by simply putting out quality work, you are going to  
have to work on bringing the buyers to you.  Different and changing  
ways to do that with no guarantees, but it' s already happening for  
some folks.
