I registered my biz name in the state of Illinois as a dba (doing business as) for tax purposes and a professional look. It wasn't necessary under law, but it's brought me discounts on office supplies and given me contacts I would not have normally made.
I also carry a rider on my homeowner's insurance for another $1 million in liability that covers libel claims, injury to anyone on my property where my office and trial gardens are and more. It costs me an additional $25 a year and worth it in case I ever have to defend what I've written in court.
Hope this helps.
