I'm a fogy, but I'm moderately computer literate fogy -- generally have two
computers and an iPod touch running at once, swapping back and forth. I was
using the Web when it was text based and had an estimated 80,000 Web pages
and I had my own web page back when you had to write HTML code by hand. But
I miss paper. Paper has advantages you young'uns don't appreciate, the least
of which is that it is lighter than a laptop to lug around a convention
center and the batteries don't run down. I genuinely miss my mailbox filling
up with press kits in spring, kits which I can file away in a manner I can
find them, press kits I can very quickly leaf through to find something I
remember seeing, press kits I can browse in my leisure (even perhaps while
doing certain things in a room where a computer would be awkward). Going to
Google for information and coming up with 222,000 hits to sort through is
very different from going to a file drawer and pulling out exactly what you
want. And those file drawers are also stuffed with session hand-outs which I
can also find, with hand written notes, in moments, even though they may
have been filed a decade ago.
