Re: No GWA handouts--paper prohibition
"Do GWA members really want to be part of an organization that "prohibits" what its speakers choose to do?" As an organization for garden communicators, not just writers, GWA should always be looking for ways to raise the level that professional speakers perform at. Frankly, many professional speakers view the printing of the powerpoint slides (six to a page!!) as a shoddy handout prepared by a lazy presenter. Yes, it takes time and thought to distill your presentation into a front-and-back one sheet. As an organization I think it's our responsibility to hold this up as a worthwhile standard. We can ask our speakers to provide a one sheet handout and say that if they want our members to see the actual slides the speaker can post the entire presentation on line.
I do a great deal of speaking and every organization that hires me has different demands. I've even had it specified that they don't want a handout with less than 14 pt fonts used because the membership couldn't read such small print. I've always thought that this is the organizations right because their responsibility was to their membership, not to me.
