[GWL]: web readers cut out magazines

Claude said and asked >>
I doubt that this internet activity has reduced the number of
subscriptions to gardening publications. Does anyone have reliable
information to support this theory? >>

No--- but this is on the net -

A recent survey has found that Internet users are slowly steering away
from other forms of media -- 24% of 'net users have cancelled their
subscriptions to news magazines and 19% have significantly decreased
their magazine reading in general. (Emarketer, July 26, 20001)

You can interpret this anyway you want Claude -- against this view is
one that says in the 1990s magazines boomed --- just as the internet
boomed ??? --- but then again half the new mags were technology based
anyway --- you know the Red Herrings, Business 2.0 etc even Garden.com
put out a "magazine" copies of which found there way to newstands here
in Australia --- (as if we can buy plants from the USA - the quarantine
boys would have heart attacks)

But it would seem logical to me that if you are after information
(rather than the glossy pictures) and can get this information for
"free" on the net or pay for it in a mag then you would choose the
cheaper option. The dynamics between the paper and electronic media are
very interesting.

That's one reason why I think recent posts about a gardening writers
site based on a subscription service are a bit "pie in the sky" - why
would people pay when they can find what they want fairly quickly on the
net for free - search engine technologies (eg google) are rapidly
improving so you spend less time following irrelevant links, there are
oodles of easily accessible forums with lots of people willing to pass
on information for free etc etc

I suggested some time ago that linking up with companies with web sites
who need new and fresh content continuously is one expanding avenue for
garden writers.

PS -- all this from someone who does not write about gardening, own a
garden business or live in the USA.

Regards,

Michael Elliott
