My kids gave me a compost tumbler about ten years ago. I had to beg. They couldn't believe it was an appropriate Christmas present for their mom. It's a large gray plastic barrel with a screw-on lid and it sits on a frame of pvc pipe.
The tumbler is unobtrusive and easy to spin but the "compost" finishes up wet, lumpy and disgusting. I know I don't have the proper ratio of greens and browns - I just dump my kitchen waste in and occasionally add some leaves or hay. It is interesting to unscrew the lid and watch the action - I'm easily amused - so it's more entertainment center than efficient machine.
My usual composting method is to dump the kitchen and garden waste where I want it, stomp on it and cover it with mulch. This is about as efficient as one can get, I'd say.
