Re: Compost Tumblers

Dear Brook:
We live on an a small spit of land in Scituate MA. The houses are
jammed together and a smelly composte pile would be noticeable. I've
detected no odor unless I put my head in the thing. We composte kitchen
vegetable waste, some grass clippings, and garden debris (not weeds).
Initially we did grind up the material in a food processor (it died) but now
we just put it in. We try not to put in large tough stalks or any woody
material.
Having two tumblers helps. While one tumbler is aging, the other can
be filling up. The process (largely due to our laziness) takes time and
currently both tumblers are full of lovely rich composte waiting to be dumped
and used. Friends who have a single tumbler tend to forget to turn it when
it is full. The turning is important.
Would I reccommend them? Yes. They are inobtrusive, turning a
tumbler is a lot easier than turning a pile of waste by hand.
       Hope this helps,
       Deb
