I think I am going to have to go for the original paper. If I had read this on April 1, I would have deleted it as a joke, but coming now, I will have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Is it yield per acre or yield per plant? If you plant corn on 15 inch centers instead of 30 inch centers and the corn only averages 1.5 ears per plant you still will have higher yield per acre than what 2 ears per plant will yield on 30 inch centers.
