Libraries---was filtering software

>It always seemed to me that public libraries had the general material, but not much else, while university libraries were the place if  you wanted tons of minute detail and esoteric research papers, but were short on overviews of a subject.<  

By me, at least, university libraries are difficult to use. Parking is impossible, and the work/study kids behind the counter don't know what they're doing. I had one at EKU, for instance, tell me there "are no special collections."

Interestingly, however, using the ILL gives me better than both worlds. How so? Because very often the schools will send reference books out on an ILL request. So a book I would not be able to check out of the University library not only becomes available, but becomes available in the comfort of my own home.

So, I would have to say that my public library serves my needs best. And that the ILL librarian is my best friend.
