Does anyone else use this source? What are your experiences?
Sarah, could you give us some idea of how its nomenclature and comprehensiveness compares with other sources? If you search on an invalid name does it tell you the correct one? Could you give us a few examples, what happens if you submit Polygonum cuspidatum (a long superceded name for Japanese knotweed)? Does it telll you the correct name? The free trial focuses on Gingko biloba, but some of the most popular cultivars in the US are not included. And there are no citations after 2000.
It sounds as if this could be a very important reference, but it would be useful to members of this list to know what you get for the $39.95 a year.

In my opinion, the University of Minnesota Plant database is the most comprehensive source. You need a subscription to the web-site to access its information. I'd be very interested to know what garden writers actually use to ensure that their plant names are correct. Or is no one especially interested in the subject? As evidence of the importance of this issue, a recent Timber Press book has just been reviewed in The Garden (the Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society), now the best selling garden magazine in Britain. "The standard of nomenclature in the book is poor... In many instances the proper distinctions between variety, subspecies, cultivar and hybrid have not been made," says the expert reviewer. "Some of the names are not in current usage..." In a serious and supposedly authoritative book, this not really acceptable and the review shows that authors will be found out. Getting the names right is absolutely basic. How do other members of this list go about ensuring nomenclatural acccuracy?
