Gene Bush said, " When I was a lad my father used a long pole to knock worms from theand Lon wrote to me offlist saying, "A leaf worm isn't an earthworm, it's a leaf eating larva. In this case, it's probably the so-called "Catalpa Worm" as it feeds on the Catalpa tree. It's highly prized by fishermen. Sorry, but I don't have the scientific name."
trees in our front yard. It was my job to pick them up and place then in a
bucket with a lid having holes punches in the top. He then used them as bait
when fishing. Tree was the Catalpa, or Indian Bean. Father refereed to the
big green worms as catalpa worms. Any chance this could be your "leaf worm"?
to which I reply. . .
This is a perfect case in point, because the leaf worms sold by bait dealers here in Michigan are definitely earthworms. I don't know if they are Apporectodea turgida or Lumbricus rubellus or Octolasion cyaneum or some other species. I usually can tell Lumbricus rubellus, but I am not convinced that's what these are.
Yes, I know about Catalpa Worms which are insect larvae, and which are used for bait.
