Re: Query

Hi Nancy,

There has been a great deal of research on the positive effects of
plants/nature and what works in longterm care facilities and hospitals can
be applied equally well to the home.

Just for starters:

American Horticultural Therapy Association: www.ahta.org

Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association: www.chta.ca

Diane Relf at Virginia Tech: www.hort.vt.edu/human/human.html

Roger Ulrich, Texas A&M (who has done many of the studies you referred to)

Richard Mattson, Kansas State University (which offers degrees in Hort
Therapy) www.oznet.ksu.edu/horttherapy/home.htm
and the KSU Library has lots of source info. I'm not sure if Beth Deger is
still there but she is terrifically helpful:
www.lib.ksu.edu/subguides/horttherapy/index.shtml

Mitchell Hewson, HTM, at Homewood Health Centre, Guelph, Ontario
hewsmitc@homewoodhealth.com

Eugene Rothert, head of HT Services at Chicago Botanic Garden
www.chicago-botanic.org/therapy/index.html

Check out Edward O. Wilson's books, and there's lots on the web about his
biophilia hypothesis (our innate connection with nature that is vital to our
health).

Green Nature, Human Nature by Charles Lewis.

And, might I add, there's lots of info in my book, The Holistic Garden:
Creating Spaces for Health and Healing (Prentice Hall, 2001, Penguin, 2002)
available through Gardenscape Tools: www.gardenscapetools.com

Hope that helps!
Karen
