I write a weekly self-syndicated column for newspapers. In my press kit I
include 12 columns, one for each month. That allows me to pick the better
columns, but still give a range, and I update the columns I include
periodically. There is the standard one page bio I use to send to groups
I'm speaking to. I include a couple magazine articles and a pamphlet or
two. And a card, of course. All in a really nice folder I got in huge
quantities from a dollar store.
Most important, I include a magnitized card with a small picture and a
catchy motto and contact information. The truth is that most papers you
approach don't need a garden columnist right now. But they may some day.
So there needs to be something they can keep, just in case.
Now, why would I pass this excellent advice on to someone who might put
their press kit in to the same people I am approaching? The answer is
simple -- to the best of my knowledge I have NEVER gotten a paper through
a press kit. You get papers through word of mouth and personal contact.
Still, we have these computers, and they can do amazing things, and we
have to do it. So knock yourself out.
