Re: Portland, OR Gardens

Hello, if it's private gardens you're after, you might contact the Hardy
Plant Society of Oregon -- 503-224-5718 (website
http://www.hardyplantsociety.org ). Members of this society ($35/annum or
so) visit a whole list of private gardens in the Portland metro area (free,
of course). Everything is listed by date and described in the HPSO Open
Gardens Book. That's a good way to access a bunch of private gardens that
are already open to visitors on particular dates. But it's a potshot:
sometimes you get an incredible established garden, other times you get a
brand-new garden opened for the first time, and the excitement factor can
vary as a result. But different gardens are open different weekends. If you
tell me exactly when you'll be here, I can check what's open on those dates
and provide recommendations.

If you're coming up the coast, try to visit the Connie Hansen Garden in
Lincoln City 541-994-6338. Free. I haven't been in six years or so but it
was a neat place... In Portland, don¹t' miss the Portland Classical Chinese
Garden. There are two interesting, small botanical gardens: Leach and Berry.
Hoyt, the big arboretum, is mostly large trees and most of the interesting
stuff is relatively young, planted close to the visitors' center. I have
lots of private garden suggestions but they would require making
arrangements with the individuals which own them. If you need more
information, contact me again and I will do my best to help you, based on
the dates of your visit and the types of gardens that interest you.
