Re: Proven Winners shipment

If you received smaller plants (2 1/4") and planted them in the fall after
the garden writers symposium. I would say that the plants did not become
root established before winter and the plant is in ground (not containers)
hardy to zone 4 . I have planted 5" plants in my garden and they have
survived the winters for the last two years and I would be happy to send
larger material to those of you that contact me off list regarding this.

My Monet will tolerant full sun to partial shade and the browning of the
leaves is not due to leaf burn. We have had extensive research done on this
plant at MSU and they concluded that the burning was not due to scorching,
but that the plant is sensitive to high salt levels. The browning of the
leaves does not typically occur until early fall (as if the plant is storing
the salt and then releases it) and is partially a result of the plant going
into dormancy earlier than other weigela varieties. Which in turn protects
it from getting extensive tip dieback in the winter.

My Monets also failed to return. I got them late in the season and am
wondering if they needed more time to become established. We had a
relatively mild winter and I had purple oxalis and a pineapple lily
overwinter in my gardens. I placed mine in full sun and the leaf edges
turned brown - we had record heat. I think this plant needs to be protected
from afternoon sun and kept moist for it live and look good.
