Re: another thought re: web pages

Hi All,

While I am new to this listserv and to the world of blogging and web
pages, I've spent 30+ years in marketing and PR, 4 years as a garden
writer. While there may be new media, there really is nothing new under
the marketing sun. Should you or shouldn't you give out your e-mail or
phone number? That depends. Why do you have a blog or web page? What do
you want it to do? If you want to sell a product, e.g., plants, tools,
you've GOT to provide contact information. I do not purchase via internet
because of a bad experience. But I do get the info and then place a
telephone order. That way, I have the name of the person I talked to and
have recourse if there is a problem. The one exception here is books,
because you can simply link to Amazon or your publisher's site and remove
yourself from the sales loop, if you don't want the hassle.

First, a quick solution for those who don't want to give out their
personal e-mail or phone number on their website. A number of providers
supply more than one e-mail address and web page for no additional
charge. (We get eight of each with our Earthlink service, even though I
use a different provider for everyday mail). Use one of these other
addresses on your website or blog to limit unwanted contacts. One
advantage is that then you will know exactly where the spam is
originating and can notify the provider.

I agree, editors want you right now, or they are on to the next person on
their list. If you make it easy for them, they'll return again and again.
I point to my own experience with one editor. Over a period of two years
and a half-dozen features, our only exchanges were via e-mail, until I
met her in person at the GWA conference. If you provide an e-mail
address, I think most editors will make "first contact" that way. Use the
"insert signature" command on your toolbar, so you can supply all of your
contact info to legitimate inquiries with a single keystroke in your
reply e-mail.

Lois J. de Vries
