I DO care. I care very much. But I care more about writing what is
meaningful to me. I have done as much formulaic writing in my lifetime as
the next person. But I have seen by the success of others that it is also
possible to be artful and still find an audience (perhaps I'm thinking
more about books). This takes nothing away from anyone else; it is just a
different path, perhaps one that is more difficult. Meredith's garden
publications contain both "documentary" photos that simply record what is
there and spectacularly artful photos. It seems there is still room for
both approaches.
The way is not always straight nor the path smooth.
I view the web as a sales/marketing and research tool (where to find
something). There is so much free content on gardening, and garden
content writers are paid so poorly, that it is difficult to see how
writers or a traditional publisher can have a financially viable
enterprise on it at this time.
"How to develop a new paradigm for profitable content creation and
delivery?that includes and encourages high quality writing and
publishing?may be the biggest question for us as garden
writers. " One viable strategy, given the active gardener demographic, is
for a publisher to experiment a little, hang back, and let someone else
make all of the expensive mistakes first, while being prepared (with
material) to strike when the opportunity finally presents itself.
I think people who produce quality anything do so because of their own
values, not because of how much they are paid.
Perhaps other members would be willing to disclose (at least in terms of
number of figures) the largesse they collect from their blogs and
websites. I'm all the way up to two figures, myself.
Regards,
Lois
