Re: J Beetles are DEFINITELY HERE!
Japanese beetles only showed up here (south central Wisconsin) four years
ago.
The infestations have grown worse each year as natural checks have not yet
been established.
I'm doing a better job of hand picking, which supposedly can help, as it
has. Last year the raspberries were severely skeletonized. This year, I'm
killing the little b------s faster than they can swarm and start to do
serious damage.
The beetles seem to prefer wild grapes first, domestic grapes second,
asparagus fronds third, then raspberries. I've made a simple collecting
device using a funnel and a plastic gallon jug that takes advantage of their
defense mechanism of falling. It's far easier and more efficient than
trying to get them to drop into a dish of soapy water or trying to pick off
each one.
Otherwise, cabbage moths, fireflies, and potato beetles all seem to be
significantly less than in previous years, but only the potato beetles are,
so far, nonexistent.
Mosquitoes, on the other hand . . .
