Re: GWL - gardening on TV

I think we would all love to see more gardening and I truly think there is
room for everything from 'you put the bulb in the ground pointy side up'
to Lady whatever's latest hothouse orchid, not to mention gardening in
Alaska/The Shetland Islands vs Texas and Tucson. Even in its heyday HGTV was
giving garden programs from Florida in January which starred plants that the
snow bound north couldn't even consider on a mild day. Don't people want to
know what they should/could be doing right now in/for their garden (even if
it is under snow), and how to do it? Don't they want to be introduced to
projects that are within their budget that they can plan or dream about? of
course they also want a spattering of gardens from the rich and famous, and
most of all don't they want all that presented to them in an entertaining
way? If they don't want any of that then how come I get crowds for winter
pruning and most of us get good audiences for a myriad of garden topics that
address everything from dainty hot house plants, to ugly diseases and the
latest greatest echinacea.

The bigger problem that I see is the support from the industry who would
expect to get something out of it. The major players, such as Scots, Home
Depot etc expect to get some sort of earnings from sponsoring a show, yet most
garden writers would cringe at mentioning, let alone endorsing, an annual
lawn treatment for pest control (particularly when there is no evidence of
a problem). The BBC does not have this problem per se, but many broadcast
companies do - the show has to educate, entertain and pull in revenue.

A great topic to discuss though

You yourself have done a wonderful job of turning someone who bought a
plant as an interior decoration into a plantsperson without them ever
noticing - I get really angry when those in the trade refer to orchids, or any
other plants for that matter, as "disposables" as they often do here. And the
BBC used to do this - but not any more to my mind
