dumiing up

After following this thread I couldn't resist. I began writing my column
some three decades ago and the only reason I did was because I was so
furious at the white-gloved garden set writing about their roses, garden tea
parties and flower show competitions. I fumed at the publisher and told him
that in this (that) day of environmental awakening he needed a column that
spoke to the science of gardening and not the social skills of gardening. I
think I may have mentioned the word 'horticulture'. The next week I was
writing the column.

So I began to write about the science as much as possible but still got
plenty of resistance. A succession of editors would suggest column subjects
such as colorful pots, pastels for planters and making wreaths for
Christmas. I resisted. I stuck to the science as best I could and assumed my role
not just as a journalist presenting information but as an educator.
Nonetheless there remained a small heading above my column that continued to say
 "Gardening"

But about eight weeks ago when picked up a copy of the paper I looked at
my column and much to my surprise and delight the heading had
unceremoniously been changed without a word to me. It now says "Horticulture".

Now, some 1500 plus columns later...I think I've won. lol.
