Master Gardener magazine went under as a result of Washington state
government budget issues which left me with a once a week column. Having
also been a victim of the travel industry crash after 9/11 I stuffed my back
pocket full of options and since 2006 have been the half time small farms
coordinator for WSU extension in Spokane. I also have a contract with our
health district to develop community gardens in the city. Three are growing
and two more are under development.

Hi all,
I?m doing an article for the next Quill & Trowel on what GWA members are
doing in this proverbial ?sinking? economy to keep themselves afloat, as the
garden writing/photography/design/communications options are becoming more
limited. For myself, I had the best freelance job ever that lasted 4 years
4 months and 4 days (but who?s counting) working with Rosalind Creasy on her
new Edible Landscaping book. It meant spending a lot of time in
California, eating fresh out of her garden, and other wonderful perks.
Because of the length of that job, I really couldn?t commit to much else, so
at the end, I found myself without many options. And since unlike my former
cat, Sebastian, who earned his keep with photos of him in my gardens, my
current felines are indoor cats who, as far as earning capacity goes, do not
bring in a dime. Anyway, I?ve got a few garden irons in the fire, but I?m
also working for friends who own Chocolaterie Stam, writing a manual for
their franchisees. And once that?s done, they have other projects.
Dency Kane, photographer, is branching out into horse photography, while
Sylvia Martin is doing headshots for professionals. Not that anyone is
giving up on the hope of garden-related income, but folks are finding they
have to do something else if they have no other means of support.
So if any of you would like to share what your new money-making endeavors
are, I would love to hear from you. You can contact me off-list.
Thanks so much for your anticipated help!!
Cheers,
Cathy

Okay does anyone have insight on the bonus day tours at GWA Dallas?
One looks more promising as far a s prvate urban gardens go (Oak Cliff)
but is only a half-day, the other has private gardens to plus Ft Worth
Botanical Garden. *sigh*
So I guess my question is: does anyone know what the 3 private gardens on
the Ft Worth day are like?
Sincerely,
Kathy Jentz

This article suggests that the most widely read magazine in the world, will
go under. I grew up with it, and have read it for more than 5 decades. I
grieve.

Great to see Amy Stewart in Anchorage where she will be giving a workshop

Daryl,
I just went to their site and it doesn't appear they are closing. In fact
there is a long list of jobs in NY and WI... Another article suggests they
had to cut back and restructure...but who hasn't? Don't start any rumors or
it could hurt them. According to Wikipedia they started in 1922!
Let's start a rumor that they are expanding, hiring and doing fine...!

Cathy
Not writing directly, but primary income is my nursery so we are
spending money to make money (that is the theory). We began a local ad
campaign for fall planting last month. Ads will run in local newspaper, then
in local slick magazine and then on web site of the newspaper. Timing is
from July through mid-November. Also working for a feature on our business
in the slick magazine.
Attempting to spend more time and focus on Facebook, LinkedIn. Keep
my monthly newsletter on time and my weekly blog centered on helping shade
gardeners help themselves. Learning curve is a bit steep for an oldster like
myself on Facebook and my blog.
All of this, as you can see, is about garden writing... just that I
must be my own publisher as well. Reaching out directly to my customers as
much as possible, but also using what media I can afford.

We miss her in Buffalo! 70 of us bloggers are having a blast here.
Happy birthday, Amy; we love you!

And yes, I do want the whole list to see this.
