Re: WaPo column on newspapers
Excellent column! And all sadly true.
A weekly ag journal in PA (I'm an occasional contributor) recently had to issue a groveling front-page apology for something ugly that slipped by their overworked multitasking editor. Someone sent in (by email, in an online form) a harmless-looking Want-To-Buy ad, looking for 20 rural acres on which to build a hunting cabin. Said editor read the first 5 words, just enough to figure out where it should go, and posted it. Unfortunately, the specifications read, "must have bears and no c---s---ing a--hole bureaucrats anywhere in sight." And it ran uncensored in the next issue.
Much of the readership consists of Amish and Mennonite farming families. As I'm sure you can imagine, they got LOTS of irate feedback.
I missed the original issue, read the apology the next week, and had the whole thing explained to me by a smirking friend who had recently been let go from her job (at a different publication) as a proofreader.

A wonderful, humorous and sobering column in the Washington Post about how the
ewspaper business has changed.
