Re: Tomato late blight

Hi, Nancy!

Last year I used Serenade (bacillis subtilis) and didn't get late blight but when I compared notes with C.L., she did the same and it didn't work for her. On last night's webinar, there was some commentary about Serenade which indicated it's not a dependable treatment. I submitted a question re Actinovate (streptomyces lydicus) but it's one of the questions that didn't get answered so I'm hoping they get to it via the "ask" function on the website.

I also have been dialoging with NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association), our regional organic crowd about Actinovate as well. Like you, I have been using it regularly this season after spending some time in February at New England Grows (a regional trade show) with the folks that make/market it. They had a booth there this year and I took the time to work through the details with them.

I really want to stay away from copper since over time it builds up in the soil and is harmful to the microbes, which is why it's not approved for organic farmers in NYS, right Andrew?
So far, so good. But I wonder if I'm just lucky like I was last year or if the stuff really is working its magic.

The webinar was excellent and there is great depth of knowledge about where the disease is across the country, when it appears, historical perspectives, etc. Anyone who has any interest in this will find tons of useful info on http://www.longislandhort.cornell.edu/vegpath/photos/lateblight_tomato.htm<http://www.longislandhort.cornell.edu/vegpath/photos/lateblight_tomato.htm>. For example, I was really surprised to see that it appears each year in Maine, of all places!
