San Francisco area gardeners question

A friend of mine has a surplus of 5 gallon buckets that he  would like to 
use for plants. Of course he will put drainage holes in them. But  being in 
zone 6b Pittsburgh, I'm not sure what would do well for him.  Suggestions?
