Re: GWL snipping messages
I haven't seen any decrease in e-mail. Wish I could see I had. But at least e-mails are easy to save and categorize, whereas if I have to recall whether the message came from Twitter, Facebook, or what, unless I can take care of it immediately, I have to spend time searching for the original to reply, and sometimes it falls down the list, I don't see it anymore and thus don't reply. (Maybe my bad organization skills....)
Smart phones are one of the huge reasons that we need to try to snip out extraneous messages (the rules for list users say to leave enough so others can see what you're replying to and what the issue is). I usually read GWL messages on my iPhone and when a replier doesn't snip at all, I often have to wade through 6 or even 10 previous messages -- that I've already read -- to find where in the world the current digest begins again. And if several people have done it -- usually when we have a hot-and-heavy discussion going -- it's a mess and sometimes I just give up. (Maybe this isn't a problem when you have elected to receive individual messages instead of the digest??)
So, Geri, not snipping as we've been asked to do can be confusing and time-consuming to others. It doesn't take long to snip (I can easily do it on my iPhone; I don't know about other brands, Kathy) What I find is easiest -- even on my laptop -- is to hit reply and then delete all the other posts except the one I want to mention, and then type in my reply instead of replying first and then just hitting the send button, forgetting all those other messages.
Thank you, Jeff, for bringing this up once again. I realize there can be different ways of looking at this issue. I know that when I've been in a rush, I've occasionally not snipped, too (mea culpa). But when I'm trying to make my way through a too-long list because participants didn't snip, I end up skipping over posts that I may have enjoyed or been able to help someone with a request because the messages are all jumbled.
All the best,
Judy Lowe
