Re: nurse crops
In horticulture, a faster growing nurse plant, such as coyote brush, can
help a slower-growing plant survive. It shields the slower plant from
predators, intense sun, wind, etc. I've seen this used in a
wildland-interface garden where deer roamed freely. It gave the slower
plants a chance at survival; alone, they would get trampled or picked off.
